Dugongs, the ocean’s true vegetarians, spend most of their lives grazing on seagrass meadows, often eating nearly 40 kilograms a day and leaving little “grazing trails” behind that help new shoots grow. Unlike their manatee cousins, they have dolphin-like tails and a downturned snout perfect for hoovering up seagrass. They surface every few minutes for a quick breath before sinking back down, usually alone or in pairs, though sometimes in herds when food is abundant. Sadly, these gentle giants are classed as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to boat strikes, fishing gear, and the loss of seagrass beds. Spotting one while diving is extraordinary—they’re shy, but if you stay still and calm, a curious dugong may choose to glide right by you, reminding us that protecting them and their underwater gardens protects the balance of entire coastal ecosystems.
